My role as a Community Health Worker (CHW) drastically shifted due to the global pandemic. I am working on the ground more than ever before. The demand of CHW highly increased - local agencies are frequently reaching out for our support. I recently assisted in the COVID-19 testing site at Providence Housing Authority (PHA) where residents were rapid tested. The team and I wore full-on PPE from top to bottom. One of my many new responsibilities includes delivering groceries to families living in the zip code areas 02909 & 02908 - specifically those who are in quarantine or isolated. I make about 5-10 deliveries per week. We wrote this open letter in June 2020 to Womxn of Color in Rhode Island, 3 months after RI declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19, and in the midst of the national uprisings against structural racism and the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and so many of our other Black sibilngs. We wrote this letter to Womxn of Color know that we see them, to acknowledge that our communities were in crisis before the global pandemic, and to ask Womxn of Color to stand with us in demanding divestment from state and local police and the Rhode Island Department of Corrections and reinvestment in the health of our communities, and long term infrastructure. So this year was very hard, and especially since the passing of my mom in September, things have kind of went downhill. My mental state, finances, home life and schooling for my son have all had a dive bomb effect since Covid has struck us. It's been one thing after another. And it's not only our family, but many more as well. Our every day life and all of our routines have a been thrown in disarray due to this pandemic. It's especially hard during the holidays because of the social distancing order. But regardless with all of that, there are people out there that make it their mission to see others smile and try to get a resemblance of normalcy back to them and lighten up their spirit. I am a fortunate recipient of that determination from the loving people I have to come to know at ONE Neighborhood Builders. With the food donations and supply runs, they have greatly helped out my family in particular amongst others I know. I am truly grateful for the hard work and support they give to us.
