As we see things change, our guidance is going to change.” —Governor Raimondo (News brief 5/15/2020) Covid-19 is not political. Not even bi-partisan. It is a mindless, soulless, non-human pathogen transmitted from human to human by breath (talk, sneeze, cough, laugh)—whether or not the infected person has symptoms—and which to date has sickened 1.4 million Americans and sent 86,000 through horrible suffering to death. As state and federal governments attempt to mitigate its effects and prevent further disaster, the limitations of their (or anyone’s) control are increasingly obvious, and the political maneuverings of some in government increasingly horrifying. COVID-19 JOURNAL #6  “LOOK FOR THE HELPERS” In his May 4th talk in the series “Habits of Grace,” Bishop Michael Curry cited a story Mr. Rogers once told about his mother*:       When he was a little boy, he asked her about scary things in the news—about difficult and painful things in the news—and his mother gave him some simple advice of how to handle that. She said to him, “Always look for the Helpers.”       I have a sneaking suspicion that signs of God’s continued watchful care, signs of hope, are in the helpers.      This past April 27th was the 100th birthday of one of those helpers. Captain Tom More**, retired Royal Air Force, celebrated his 100th birthday. But even of more significance than that, earlier in April Captain More, who had just had hip surgery—he was 99 at the time—began trying to raise money for the health system in Britain. And he hoped to raise about 1,000 pounds, by walking and asking people to give on a web site.      Well, he raised more than 1,000 pounds… Between the beginning of April and his birthday on April 27th he raised more than 40 million dollars! People from all over the world gave money to support and help the National Health System during this crisis. People from all over the world…      Mr. Roger’s mother was right. If you want to see the hand of God even in the midst of the most difficult times, look for the helpers. I thought about the helpers I know, and know of: A friend who works at Walmart—there every day, mask and all (once they got masks)—a place whose doors I have not darkened since February, and don’t plan to; the postal deliverers who come every day into this building of 50 apartments; the Amazon, Fedex, and UPS drivers who come right to my apartment door with my orders; the postal clerk behind the counter (of necessity not 3 feet from the customer); the homemakers and home health aides who come faithfully into the apartments of the elderly here; the building manager who comes in and often goes door to door with notices; the nursing home caregivers who cannot avoid physical contact with their patients; the grocery store staff stationed at the counters (not 3 feet from the customer); the pharmacists and assistants; the truck drivers moving food, oil, gasoline, etc. over the land to keep us all supplied; those answering phones at 2-1-1 and other hotlines; the state governors and health departments; nurses, doctors, and hospital staff; custodians and maintenance workers… In a word, those who have not been able to stay safely at home as I have, or who have chosen not to, in order to serve others—shopping for them, running errands, caring for their health, etc. It struck me that these people, regardless of what their personal belief systems may be, are doing in actuality what others may only give lip-service to. In one of his letters, John says, “Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”***  What is serving others before self, if not love? At the end of his talk, Bishop Curry read this prayer for Helpers: Compassionate God, support and strengthen all those who reach out in love, concern, and prayer for the sick and the distressed. In their acts of compassion, may they know that they are your instruments. In their concerns and fears, may they know your peace. In their prayer, may they know your steadfast love. I wish I could tell you this global pandemic has allowed me to take the time to improve upon myself. This, however, would be a big, fat lie. I am devastated. I am thankful that no one I know is sick, but that doesn’t change the fact that I cry myself to sleep every other night. I assume a lot of people reflect on pre-corona times as better times, but for me it all blends together. I was struggling before this pandemic exploded in my face. Still, however, the future gave me hope. Growing up, I always bragged about having the coolest graduation year, 2020. Go figure, huh. I wanted to wear a cap and gown. I wanted to make my family proud. I wanted to celebrate with my friends. Instead, I have not seen them in months. I can not help but feel like time is running out. I do not want to be six feet apart anymore. I want a hug. This was supposed to be a magical time, but I feel as though I am in a horror movie instead of a fantasy film. I want this nightmare to end. I want to feel proud of four years of hard work instead of spending what’s supposed to be the final home stretch of my education in despair. Instead of mastering a new skill, my bad habits have only gotten worse. Distance learning does not work for me. I’ve become a master procrastinator. That, however, isn’t even the worst of it. It’s so easy to go insane when you have all the time in the world to overthink. I beat myself up all day. My inner voice is relentless. I wish it would just shut up, but alas I feel as though I am constantly in a battle with myself, my worst enemy. Do not be so hard on yourself, everyone says. They are right, but I never listen. Every day, I set my alarm for early in the morning so that I can wake up and have a fresh start. I think of elaborate plans to become someone that meditates in the morning and goes on runs. Nonetheless, I always wake at noon and feel guilty that I failed to execute the unrealistic endeavors I dreamt of the night before. However, the next time I moved, I couldn't find yoga classes I enjoyed and my practice came to a halt. I moved the mat from home to home but never looked for classes again. So the mat went untouched for a dozen years. March 26, 2020: We'd been under lockdown for 10 days and my sister in Boston texted to ask if I wanted to stretch together in the afternoons. I immediately loved the idea. Sarah stretches every morning before breakfast and she knew I'd been anxious, so this suggested activity was solely for my benefit. And it sounded so nice -- a daily check-in with someone I love PLUS motivation to move my body a bit (something I don't do enough). This was a GIFT. Nearly every day since then, we've met via video call and done a yoga video from YouTube. I put my laptop on the floor, unfurl my mat, sit down, and start a Zoom call with Sarah. We often chat first, sitting 40 miles apart on our mats and staring at our laptop screens. Then we do yoga for 15-25 minutes, and then there's often more talking. We talk about ourselves, our partners, our parents, our work. My yoga mat is now stored in the corner of the living room instead of a closet. And it's not used for simply yoga. It keeps me connected to my sister. And what could be more important than that?
